Like many enduring brands, KangaROOS 🦘 were born to meet a specific need. In 1979, an American architect named Robert Gamm, also a passionate follower of the running craze, found himself in a common dilemma: where to put his house keys when going out for a run? Posing the question during his daily seven-mile workout, he finally had a "Eureka" moment. A pocket on the side of the shoe would protect the keys! In search of a name for his invention, Gamm dubbed his shoes KangaROOS, as kangaroos are fast runners who never move backward. And they have a pouch, just like the shoes.
KangaROOS proved to have a perfect trinity of brand name, concept, and product. They also emerged at a time when running had taken a significant share of the market and runners were hungry for new technologies. At that time, Nike introduced the Tailwind model with an air cushion, and thus began a competition among sportswear brands for next-level technologies. KangaROOS approached this competition from a different angle and in 1980, introduced the Combat model, an extremely lightweight running shoe with a "kangaroo" pocket that could be zipped closed, which became very popular. Mass interest began when runner Bill Rogers won the Boston Marathon with a pair of KangaROOS Combats and broke his record. 🏆
